The 2023/24 Premier League season will be the 32nd edition of its kind and the 125th edition of top English football. The league lists 20 top clubs competing for the title across 38 rounds. Will Manchester City continue their domination, or can someone stop them? In our preview, we review what we can expect from this season.
Short Recap
Last season, Arsenal’s young team was swinging left and right, taking out any team that crossed their path. Manchester City was fighting for their third consecutive title but was also aiming for a historic treble.
After the Cityzens failed to turn up in a few games, it seemed like it was all over for their dream. However, Erling Haaland’s incredible goal tally had the club slowly reach the table leaders. Ultimately, the lack of depth in the Arsenal bench cost the Gunners their title.
City succeeded in securing the title with a few games to spare. With this, they got their hands on the third consecutive and club’s 9th overall title.
The renowned Newcastle have put it in gear and secured a spot in the Champions League along with Manchester United. Liverpool dropped a few crucial games and dipped into an unusual competition for their standard. Aston Villa surprised by qualifying for Europe.
Leeds, Leicester and Southampton relegated into the Championship, while Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton Town took their place. Luton makes the 51st different club to compete in the league.
Title Contenders and Dark Horse Clubs
As the new season is upon us, we review the biggest title contenders and some dark horse clubs. As expected, the defending champions, Manchester City, are by far the biggest throne contenders. After all, The Citizens are one of the strongest clubs in the world at the moment.
Just like last season, Arsenal have a big chance of putting a stop to the domination from the Sky Blues. By finishing second, the Gunners have secured a spot in European competition but also the funding to support their conquest attempt. We can’t rule them out of the title race.
Despite their poor performance last season, Liverpool are still very dangerous. As we have seen countless times, Klopp has a solution for Guardiola’s tactics. Can they overcome the failure of last season and climb back to the top?
However, in addition to the three biggest contenders, we can’t ignore a few others. Namely, Tottenham might be left without Kane but are more than competitive in the title race.
Similarly, we have seen a glimpse of the elite club Newcastle can become. If this is their season, they have a shot at the top. At the same time, Brighton have established themselves as regulars in the top. We can expect great things from them in this season.
Potential Relegation
While some will reach the top and have a thrilling season, there is the other end of the table. After this season, we will traditionally see three clubs relegated to the Championship. Who will it be this season?
Of course, we will closely look at the performance of the newly promoted clubs. This will be Luton’s first-ever Premier League season, so it is questionable how they will fare against the best. Sheffield United and Burnley might have been at the top before, but they are also in danger if they don’t step up.
Everton has been dangerously close to relegation a few times now. After managing to remain in the league a few times, they are on shaky ground this time as well. Similarly, Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth haven’t shown the needed quality last season. If they continue like this, they could lose their spot in the top league.
