Harry Kane is one of the best players that England has ever had. He is the Three Lions captain and is also the best scorer of his nation of all time. He has scored 63 goals for England and even more for Tottenham. But with all individual claims to his name, he has never won a single trophy in his career.
The story of the Harry Kane curse started while he was at Tottenham, but now it intensified after he failed to win a title with Bayern Munich, a team that before his arrival won 11 Bundesliga trophies in a row. Are you connecting the dots yet?
Early Days of Kane’s Career
Young Harry Kane started Ridgeway Rovers. But when he was very young, he was a part of Arsenal’s and Watford’s youth academies before eventually being picked up by the Spurs. He played at White Hart Lane at the youth level between 2004 and 2009, after which he became a first-team member.
His career at Spurs didn’t get to a flyer. Harry Kane’s injury against Doncaster Rovers in just his second career game for the club disrupted his career a bit. He went on a few loan spells where he played for Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich City, and most importantly Leicester City.
Becoming a Scoring Machine
The 2014/15 Premier League season was Kane’s time to shine. It was the first time he scored in double figures during a season as he bagged 21 goals. The legend of Harry Kane 9 was born, and he never stopped from there.
Since then, he has recorded three seasons in which he scored more than 20 goals and two in which he scored north of 30. He has also won the Premier League Golden Boot award three times and has a single Playmaker award.
Overall, he is the second-best EPL scorer with 213 goals. Second only to the legendary Alan Shearer, who has scored 260 goals.
Harry Kane’s Winless Record
With all the individual acolytes to his name, Kane still lacks a trophy in his career. Playing at Tottenham, he came close to winning the League Cup two times and even played in the Champions League final in 2020. Not to mention that he never came close to winning the league with Tottenham.
All of this led pundits to believe in the Harry Kane curse. The story got even bigger after he transferred to Bayern Munich this summer, only to finish second behind Bayer Leverkusen. Bayern also failed to win the German Cup and also lost to Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the Champions League.
Individually, he was excellent once again. He became the top Bundesliga goalscorer with a record-breaking 36 goals. This is the highest score tally in his career. Yet, somehow, trophies have eluded him.
If he doesn’t win a trophy soon, we might start to believe that having him and his 30 goals per season is not really worth it.
