For some, the format of this competition can get a tad confusing, especially this year. We have already covered a few pieces about the Euro 2020 qualifying playoffs. Still, it doesn’t hurt to know how the format of the rest of the qualifiers works.

These rules may seem convoluted, particularly when we compare it to the previous format of the competition. However, due to the pandemic and a few other circumstances, a few variations on the rules must be in place. So, without further ado, here are the rules for the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers.

Euro 2020 Qualified Teams: Group Stage

Let’s start by saying that no team received automatic qualification as hosts of the tournament. That means that all 55 teams that tried to qualify had to fight for it. There were ten groups of either five or six nations. Every group has a winner and a runner-up. Therefore, there are, per group, two teams that qualified for Euro 2020.

That makes 20 teams. The remaining 4 come from the playoffs. The format is almost identical to the one in the tournament of 2016, with one key difference.

Playoff Round

For the 2016 competition, 16 teams were competing in a mini-tournament to determine who gets the remaining 4 posts. Then, the aforementioned 16 were decided by their performance in the qualifying tournament. This is where things went slightly differently this time.

The teams with the best results in the 2018–19 UEFA Nations League were divided into 4 paths with 4 teams each. The winner of each path qualified for the Euro 2020. To keep things sweet and simple, both the semifinals and the finals were single-legged. This means that each team only had one shot at going forward.

So, the Nations League group winners immediately qualified for the playoff path. Now, the rules state that if a group winner has already qualified through the qualifying group stage, they will be replaced by the next best-ranked team in the same league.

What If It Were Close?

It depends on how close the teams were. There are a bunch of tiebreakers, making sure that every situation can be handled, including the teams having the same number of points in the group stage. Here are a few criteria to determine which team deserved to go forward.

Points

If two teams have the same number of points, the first thing the committee checks is the number of points the two teams obtained in their matches. In other words, their head-to-head stats.

GD

The next criterion is the superior goal difference between the two teams. Again, this only goes for the matches between those teams. The team with the better goal difference, naturally, is the one going forward.

Number of Goals

The third and fourth criteria deal with the goals each team scored. First in the matches between the teams and, if that doesn’t work, then in the away matches.

Bringing It Down to Two

Sometimes there are three or more teams with the same number of points. Going through the criteria we mentioned here might only weed out one or two of the teams, without resolving the winner. The fifth criterion demands to go through all of these again. This time, however, it’s for the last two teams standing. If the result isn’t satisfactory, then we move on to criterion 6.

GD Again

Yes, it is up to goal difference again. Only, this time, it concerns all of the group matches and not just individual clashes. This is the vein in which the rest of the rules follow. This is why we’ve decided to try and sum up the rest of the rules, as opposed to explaining them all individually again.

Higher and Fair

Rules 7-10 deal with a higher number of goals, away goals, wins, and away wins. If by some miracle the two teams still match point-for-point, there is the issue of fairness. Every yellow card is worth one point, a red card is worth three, and a yellow card followed by a direct red card is worth four points. Finally, if all else fails, the team with a better Nations League ranking goes forward.

Qualified Teams

Teams that qualified for Euro 2020, in alphabetical order, are Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Scotland, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, and Wales.

The playoffs allowed 4 teams to prove their worth in the tournament. You can read more about those matches in our previous posts. Hungary defeated Iceland with 2-1. No surprise there. On the other hand, it seems that Slovakia did manage to shape up with a new training regime under Stefan Tarkovic. This is going to be of great use to the national team when they take on others in the competition next year.

Scotland won their match against Serbia, but the match was not easy. In fact, after a draw, they won on penalties 5-4. That may have been too close for comfort for the Scotts. Last, but not least, North Macedonia beat Georgia in the final with a single goal.

When Will the Matches Take Place?

The summer of 2021 is the time for the games. The first match of the group stage is going to take place on June 11 between Turkey and Italy. June 23 is when the fans are going to be able to watch the last four matches: two from group E and two from group F. Round of 16 starts June 26 and ends June 29. Quarterfinals are scheduled for July 2 and 3. The last four teams standing are going to the semifinals on July 6 and 7. Lastly, the final match starts on July 11.

The post How UEFA Euro 2020 Qualifiers Format Works appeared first on Free-Football.TV.

UEFA Euro 2021 Play-Off Finals: Recap

Jerome

Trending News

UEFA EURO 2020

We finally have the list of all the teams that are going to be competing in the UEFA Euro 2020. The final four slots have been filled via play-offs by Hungary, Slovakia, Scotland, and North Macedonia. Here is how the play-offs went.

Hungary-Iceland: 2-1

Five minutes into the match, Iceland’s captain, Gylfi Sigurðsson obtained a yellow card. A rare and very unwelcome occurrence quickly turned to celebration, as Sigurðsson scored the first goal in the 11th minute. Hungary was unable to score for the better part of the remainder of the match. In fact, the first half ended with no other goals.

Both teams focused on their substitutions in the second half. It wasn’t until 2 minutes to the end that Hungary equalized. They snatched the victory right from under Iceland, but it was not over yet. Dominik Szoboszlai followed in Négo’s footsteps and scored the second goal in the 92nd minute. The whistle came 4 minutes later. Iceland put up quite a fight, but Hungary owned the ball.

Northern Ireland-Slovakia: 1-2

In an amazing display that lasted over two hours, NI scored no goals. Juraj Kucka, Slovakia’s captain, had the honor of getting things started in the 17th minute. The rest of the game was filled with attacks and counter-attacks that did not hit the mark. That is until Milan Škriniar did the Irish a great favor. The defender scored a goal against his own team in the 87th minute.

This was when Slovakia realized they needed to think of something fast, but it wasn’t easy. Moreover, the extra time got a second half. It was then that Michal Ďuriš secured a spot for his team in the Euro 2020.

Serbia-Scotland: 1-1 (4-5)

Scotland won. However, the surprise comes via the fact that it should not have been this close. The Scots had a better track record and had better training. It could be that they underestimated the Serbs. Or that the White Eagles gave it all they got – who knows. Scotland was more aggressive and more precise, while Serbia had better control of the ball.

The first goal came in the second half. McGregor assisted Christie. That should have been the end of that. The Serbs received another shot at the glory thanks to Luka Jović in the 90th minute. After 122 minutes of game time, the match went to penalties. Luckily for the Tartan Beasts, Aleksandar Mitrović choked and was the only one to miss a penalty shot.

Georgia-Northern Macedonia: 0-1

Finally, Northern Macedonia won their spot in path D. The fight was long and desperate. Goran Pandev scored the only goal of the match in the second half. The two teams were simply too close in skill and opportunities for any additional changes to take place. Not for the lack of trying, though. We congratulate the winners and look forward to seeing them on the pitch next year. They won their second chance and now it’s time to plan.

The post UEFA Euro 2021 Play-Off Finals: Recap appeared first on Free-Football.TV.

Euro 2020 Play-Off Finals: When, Where, and How

Jerome

Trending News

UEFA EURO 2020

As you may or may not know, Euro 2020 has been rescheduled for 2021. However, there is still the issue of the play-offs. The play-off finals are there to tell us which four teams are taking their final shot at joining the competition.

When and Who?

The play-off finals are scheduled for November 12. The Covid-19 outbreak forced the UEFA Executive Committee to reschedule the play-offs from the original date in March. So, the semifinals were held on October 8.

As for the time and the teams, Path D starts first with their match between Georgia and North Macedonia at 18.00 CET. The rest of the matches start at 20.45. Path A has Hungary against Iceland. In Path B, Northern Ireland and Slovakia are clashing. Finally, Path C features Serbia versus Scotland.

Where?

The hosts are, traditionally, placed on the left of the matchup. So, the teams hosting the matches are Hungary, Northern Ireland, Serbia, and Georgia, respectively.

Preview

So, who are the favorites? Hungary already defeated Bulgaria to get here. Their opponents, Iceland, did the same to Romania. Hungary has a better track record overall, so we are going to go with either a win for Hungary or a draw. After all, that is how the last meeting between the two teams ended.

As for Path B, Northern Ireland and Slovakia face a similar situation. Their meetup in 2016 ended in a draw. The hosts may have an advantage simply because Slovakia now has Stefan Tarkovic as their caretaker and it will take some time to switch to his coaching style.

Serbia is going to have a tough time against Scotland. The Scotts are breaking their own records in terms of success. Scotland is likely going to be the winner.

Finally, the match between Georgia and Northern Macedonia is hard, if not impossible, to predict. Both teams have been very successful in the competition so far and either one could end up in EURO 2020. We expect that there will be just a single goal separating the winner from the loser.

How to Watch Matches?

We have covered a few streaming sites football fans use here. The streaming services not only provide the fans with the date and time of individual matches but also give the list of TV channels in individual countries that broadcast those matches. For example, ESPN is supposed to stream the finals in the US, while Sky is streaming the games in the UK.

The post Euro 2020 Play-Off Finals: When, Where, and How appeared first on Free-Football.TV.

UEFA Europa League – Matchday 3 Expectations

Jerome

UEFA EURO 2020

October 29 was the last time we had to enjoy some action in the UEFA Europa League. Now that is about to change as we enter Matchday 3. Football fans eagerly await the clash between Benfica and Rangers.

Group A

Roma will take CFR Cluj on at 18.55 CET and Young Boys will try their luck with CSKA-Sofia at 21.00. Matchday 2 left a lot to be desired for this group as both matches ended in a draw. Hopefully, this is going to shake things up a bit. Or, at the very least, cement Roma at the top of the group.

Group B

Rapid Wien and Dundalk face off at 18:55 CET and Arsenal and Molde come on three hours later. Seeing as how both Arsenal and Molde are sitting atop 6 points each, this is going to be a huge tiebreaker that may very well set the tone of the group for the rest of the competition.

Group C

Slavia Praha vs Nice is scheduled at 18:55, at the same time as Hapoel Beer-Sheva vs Leverkusen. The teams are too close together to make a clear picture of what we can expect.

Group D

This is where the main focus of the day is. If Rangers beat Benfica with their second wind, they are going to land their place at the top of the group. Lech Poznań and Standard Liège also have a match at 18.55, though we expect the fans are going to focus only on the end result.

Group E

In group e, we have PAOK vs PSV Eindhoven and Omonoia vs Granada at 18:55. PAOK is likely going to have a tough time against PSV. However, no team has a clean sheet, so it is also probable that Thursday is not going to solve anything permanently.

Group F

Here, we have Real Sociedad vs AZ Alkmaar and Rijeka vs Napoli, both at 18.55. Alkmaar should be able to take on Real Sociedad. However, if they don’t, the scoreboard in the group is going to get a lot tenser.

Group G

This group features Leicester against Braga, as well as Zorya Luhansk against AEK Athens. Both matches take place at 21.00. Leicester is on a roll and we believe this match against Braga is just going to cement their spot at the top of the group. Zorya and AEK are going against each other for the first time this season and the game will give either of them a chance to move away from the bottom.

Group H

Celtic has not been doing well so far. They are, however, in a slightly better position than their opponents – Sparta Praha. We expect Milan is going to do away with Lille after their colossal win against Inter.

Group I

Sivasspor vs Qarabağ starts at 18.55. At 21.00, we can watch Villareal take on Maccabi Tel-Aviv. Though both Villareal and Maccabi Tel-Aviv boast the same number of victories and points, we can have a clear picture of the result of their match. This is not the only competition where Villareal has been performing admirably lately.

Group J

With a card like Harry Kane, the Spurs should be able to deal with Ludogorets with no difficulty. Antwerp is in a better position than LASK, but it is too early to tell how that match is going to play out.

Group K

This group has not had much action in the past two matchdays. The matches are Dinamo Zagreb vs Wolfsberg and Feyenoord vs CSKA Moskva. Wolfsberg and Feyenoord have 4 points each, whereas Dinamo and CSKA have 2 each.

Group L

Finally, we expect Crvena Zvezda to beat Gent. Hoffenheim also holds an advantage over Slovan Liberec.

The post UEFA Europa League – Matchday 3 Expectations appeared first on Free-Football.TV.

Euro 2020 Play-Off Semifinals: Highlights

Jerome

Trending News

UEFA EURO 2020

In November 2019, the fixtures of the Euro 2020 play-off semifinals were determined by draws. The semifinals were scheduled and played on October 8. We can expect the play-off finals on November 12. It is refreshing to see the teams clashing, considering the original prognosis for postponing the Euro 2020. Here are some of the highlights.

Path A

Bulgaria took on Hungary and lost with 1-3. While the Bulgarians gave a stout defense, they could not protect their net from the Hungarian team. Fans could somewhat expect this, as Hungary has players in the German Bundesliga.

Willi Orbán scored the first goal, after awkwardly receiving the ball from the corner. Zsolt Kalmár followed suit with a clean goal. Finally, Nemanja Nikolic really used his head in the 75th minute. Georgi Yomov scored one redeeming shot for the Bulgarian side.

The match between Iceland and Romania was not as exciting, but it still gave us some interesting action. After a failed attack by Romania, Gylfi Sigurðsson took a shot with his left leg, surprising not only the defense but the goalie, as well. He scored another goal for Iceland. Alexandru Maxim scored from a penalty kick, making the final score 2-1.

Path B

Penalties decided the outcome of the match between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Northern Ireland. At first, Bosnians seemed to have things under control, but the Irish equalized at the start of the second half. After two hours, Northern Ireland won with 4 goals to 3 on penalties.

Likewise, Slovakia and the Republic of Ireland had to settle their differences with penalties. After a score of 0-0, Slovakia won with 4-2 in penalties.

Path C

Norway lost to Serbia 1-2. The first goal did not happen until the end of the match. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic scored the first goal in the 81st minute, hoping to break the tie. Normann was quick to respond in the 88th minute, which led to overtime. Milinkovic-Savic scored again and that was it for Norway.

Scotland defeated Israel with 5-3 in penalties.

Path D

The match between Georgia and Belarus might as well have been over after 7 minutes. That’s when Georgia scored the first and only goal of the game. On the other hand, North Macedonia can thank Benjamin Kolloli for their win. He was in the wrong place and scored an own goal. Kosovo soon equalized. However, Darko Velkovski put North Macedonia ahead once more. Despite having an hour to fight back, Kosovo missed a few clear shots.

The post Euro 2020 Play-Off Semifinals: Highlights appeared first on Free-Football.TV.

All You Need to Know about EURO 2020 Play-Offs

Jerome

Trending News

UEFA EURO 2020

One thing that is on everyone’s mind at the moment is the EURO 2020 play-offs. National teams that have not made it to the EURO 2020 still have a chance to do so. Let’s dive into what the play-offs mean, who plays who, and when the games are going to take place.

Play-Offs

Four places are remaining in the UEFA EURO 2020. 16 teams are battling to get one of those spots. The fans have known about the lineups since November 2019.

The concept of play-offs in this competition is not new. The last six EUROs had five play-off tournaments. However, this year, the format is unlike the previous competitions. European Qualifiers played no role in determining who gets a chance to play in the play-offs. Instead, teams qualified through the Nations League. The teams also have to come through more than one round. We don’t know whether this format of the competition is going to persist in the next couple of years.

Who Is Playing?

Path A has Bulgaria taking on Hungary and Iceland clashing with Romania in the semifinals. The winners of the path will complete UEFA EURO 2020 Group F. The exception to this rule is Romania. If they win, they go to Group C.

Path B features Bosnia and Herzegovina against Northern Ireland and Slovakia versus the Republic of Ireland. The winners of the path go to Group E.

In Path C Scotland plays against Israel and Norway against Serbia. The winners go to Group D.

Path D brings us Georgia taking on Belarus and North Macedonia playing against Kosovo. The winners of path D will compete in Group F.

When?

The semifinals are scheduled for October 8 and the finals are going to be held on November 12, most likely around 20.45 CET. After that, we are going to have all the teams for the EURO 2020.

The post All You Need to Know about EURO 2020 Play-Offs appeared first on Free-Football.TV.

How Does Wembley Stadium Look After the EURO 2020 Cancelation?

Jerome

Trending News

UEFA EURO 2020

Wembley Stadium is by far one of the most notable football venues in England and the world. As part of the EURO 2020, it was supposed to be one of the 12 stadiums that were supposed to host the greatest Euro Cup competition ever seen, counting 24 national teams.

Instead, tragedy struck and as we all know by now the COVID-19 epidemic has decimated Europe and the entire world. This caused prompted the officials to move EURO 2020 for 12 months and leaving fans on the cusp until it continues.

The 60th anniversary of the UEFA European Football Competition was supposed to end at Wembley, which was going to host its second Euro Cup final after 1996.

So how are things now?

Instead of Euro 2020 Finale, We Got an EFL League One Playoff Final

If coronavirus hadn’t intervened, we would have been watching the finale of the Euro 2020 on July 12 at Wembley stadium. Instead, fans will have to be content with the EFL League One Playoff final match between Wycombe Wanderers and Oxford United.

Not really what fans would hope to see on this faithful day. The level of football might be considerably lower but they still may be able to witness history as Wycombe is challenging for qualifying for the Championship for the first time in their 100-year long history.

However, matches are still played without crowds so Wembley is going to look like a ghost stadium with 90,000 empty seats.

Loss of Revenue

The greatest damage that the epidemic has on sports is the loss of revenue. The UEFA Euro 2020 might have been the first major tournament that had been postponed due to the outbreak. But all major leagues around Europe have been either postponed or entirely canceled.

Luckily, some were able to continue after safe conditions had been met. But there are many that were left without champions and simply decided to cancel the season as if it had never happened.

FA has announced that they are expecting a £300 million ($380 million, 335 million Euros) loss, and that is if a second wave does not occur. It is a major blow that does not help anybody.

How Will Football Continue?

It seems that, at least for now, we are not going to see fans coming back to stadiums any time soon. The leagues that have continued their competitions have been played behind locked doors. Leaving fans to watch matches from the safety and comfort of their own homes.

Both the Champions League and the Europa League are set to continue by the start of August. This brings hopes to people that things might be getting back to normal. However, uncertainty still lies when it comes to the EURO 2020.

Even though it was postponed for a period of 12 months we still can’t predict what the future will hold. Travel restrictions are currently imposed differently in various countries around Europe and who knows what might happen by the time next year comes over.

We can only hope for the best and for football to come back safely.

The post How Does Wembley Stadium Look After the EURO 2020 Cancelation? appeared first on Free-Football.TV.

Must-Know Facts About the Postponed Euro 2020

Jerome

Interesting facts

UEFA EURO 2020

As you may or may have not heard, we are not getting the European Competition in 2020 as planned. In fact, we may not be getting a lot of sports as well. Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, many sports competitions have either been postponed or completely scrapped.

The Champions League will finish off as a tournament, while the Europe League will see its end decided in Germany. Another enormous sports competition that was moved was the 2020 Tokyo Olympics that will take place next year.

But what about Euro 2020?

Here are all the facts that you need to know about its postponement.

Why Has Euro 2020 Been Postponed?

After the outbreak of the coronavirus that impeached most of sports competitions and the entire way of life that we know, Euro 2020 was one of the biggest sports competitions that were affected by it.

Due to the devastation caused by the virus, safety regulations could possibly not be met. More so, travel restrictions have been made and each country imposes its own rules. This makes the situation a lot harder when traveling from country to country, especially for sports reasons.

When was Euro 2020 Supposed to Take Place?

Euro 2020 was seen as a 60-year anniversary of the European Competition. The idea behind it was to hold the competition for the first time in 12 different countries on 12 different venues.

The competition was supposed to start on June 11 2020 and finish off with a final on the Wembley Stadium in London on 11 July 2020.

Why are the Playoffs Postponed Indefinitely?

Euro 2020 is supposed to count a total of 32 national teams from Europe. There are a few additional play-off matches that need to be played to determine the final contestants in the tournament.

However, due to the changing situation with the coronavirus pandemic, the safety of the people and players involved cannot be guaranteed. For now, the play-off matches are postponed for an unknown date and will be determined once the situation settles down and better safety conditions are possible.

When Will Euro 2020 be Played Now?

A decision was made to postpone the entire tournament for 12 months. This is a big blow for all the organizers involved and the national teams as well. However, the situation is more than serious and in order to preserve the integrity of the completion and the safety of players, this move had to be made.

The Euro 2020 tournament will take place on 11 June 2021 and end on 11 July 2021.

What’s Next for Sports in Europe?

After successfully postponing Euro 2020 priority has been given to all the domestic leagues. A decision was made for all European leagues to find a solution to bring a close to their domestic competitions. This should not impose with the schedule and will preserve the flow of completion that has been followed for years now.

Certain leagues have already made plans to bring their leagues to a close, but some have decided to suspend them completely.

The post Must-Know Facts About the Postponed Euro 2020 appeared first on Free-Football.TV.

Euro 2020 Officially Postponed by 12 Months

Jerome

Trending News

UEFA EURO 2020

UEFA, the governing body of European football, made it official that Euro 2020 is going to be postponed. The unexpected situation with the outbreak of COVID-19 has put football and all of the sports on hold for an unpredicted period of time. The only way to ensure the safety of the people involved and preserve the integrity of the competition was to move it for a year.

The original date for the start of Euro 2020 was June 11, but now it seems that we are going to see it start on June 11, 2021.

The decision was made by the UEFA Executive Committee that includes 55 representatives of national associations and representatives of the European Club Association, European Leagues, and FIFPro Europe. UEFA president, Aleksander Ceferin, made the ruling and informed the public on Tuesday about the inevitable postponement of the competition.

The main idea was to allow or at least give a chance for all the national competitions to finish. Besides prioritizing national leagues, UEFA also postponed all the national friendly matches as well as the additional Euro 2020 qualifiers for the time being.

Euro 2020 was supposed to be a celebration of 60 years of the competition and will be held for the first time in 12 different countries across Europe.

The post Euro 2020 Officially Postponed by 12 Months appeared first on Free-Football.TV.

Best of Euro 2020 Qualifiers

Jill Williams

Trending News

UEFA EURO 2020

Apart from The UEFA Champions League, qualifications for Euro 2020 are quite an interesting sports event to follow this autumn. The group phase is still being played, but there are at least half of the matches left, and this is only the beginning. If you love reading about football in general, however, and you’d like to see updates about your favorite team, you can do so on freebetsnow.co.uk.

There is a saying “The ball is round”, which means that no outcome is certain because anything is possible during a match. You must have seen some tennis competitions, let’s say Wimbledon in this case. So many good players are there, ready to show what they’ve been working on for the whole year.

The last year’s champions is there as well. He trained hard for the whole year, and meanwhile also won a number of other competitions. Everything points at him as a winner, even all wimbledon betting offers say that he is the best. And yet, he loses his second match to a guy who’s ranked as 35th player in the world. This is a sport, exciting and unpredictable.

So, without further ado, let’s dive into the most interesting scenes regarding Euro 2020.

Current Standings

After the first part of the group phase, we already have an idea about how things may look like in the not so distant future. Although in each group one could guess from the beginning who are the favorites, it’s worth mentioning that some of the teams have positively surprised us all.

Almost everyone expects to see some good football whenever on one side plays a team such as Italy or Spain. And indeed, these two have justified our trust. Both are still on top of their game with 18 points so far and counting.

However, in some groups, or to be more precise, group B, we’ve come to know that wonders will never cease. The national team of Ukraine reached the leading position in group B step by step, leaving behind Portugal and Serbia, which came as a surprise to the majority of people.

Highlights

First and foremost, we have to mention the high number of goals scored so far. For example, Russia played spectacularly well against San Marino with the final result of 9:0, while Germany scored eight goals against Estonia and received none.

Some of the interesting matches were the ones with a lot of goals scored but no winner whatsoever. We could witness that in matches between Norway and Sweden, and Switzerland versus Denmark.

There was also a phenomenal goal for the win scored by Nico Schulz in the last minute of the match between Germany and the Netherlands.

Another interesting team to be mentioned is the national team of Kosovo that competes for the first time as an independent country. As a rookie in this kind of competition, they started well with two wins, two draws and only one game lost. But what a loss! They scored three goals against England in England, and in that way proved that being a rookie shouldn’t be a synonym for “taken for granted.”

The post Best of Euro 2020 Qualifiers appeared first on Free-Football.TV.
